Alternative Wound Closure

Not all wounds need sutures. In fact, there are many great reasons to avoid suturing when feasible.  Sutures are a foreign body in a wound, which causes tissue inflammation and in some cases can lead to infection.  Sutures left for too long in the epidermal later can cause punctate “train tracking” marks on certain skin tones that are unsightly.  Sutures are inconvenient–most need to be removed, which means an additional visit for the patient.
